Boys Golf: Red Wing's Westerberg ties for medalist at conference meet

Red Wing senior Blake Westerberg continued his streak of garnering medalist honors Monday at the Missota Conference championship meet by shooting a 1-over 73 at Northfield Golf Club.

Westerberg, who had won medalist honors at the two previous meets, helped lead the Wingers to a fourth-place finish on the day with a team score of 318. Chaska won the meet with a 308 while Chanhassen placed second with a 312. New Prague followed with a 314, Farmington shot 328 and Shakopee had a 329.

Westerberg earned all-conference honors for his round and play throughout the conference schedule. Red Wing senior Matthew Petterson shot 76 and earned all-conference honorable mention honors. Wingers senior Jarrett Enevold added an 84 and Zach Sachen shot 85.

Red Wing finished sixth overall in the conference based on points throughout the conference schedule. Chanhassen won the conference and edged out Chaska. New Prague finished third, Shakopee fourth, Farmington fifth, Holy Angels seventh and Northfield eighth.

“In spite of some of the other scores, I don’t think we’re too far away from playing well,” Wingers head coach Todd Petterson said.

Westerberg tore his anterior cruciate ligament during football season and has rehabbed the knee as the golf season has progressed. Petterson attributed some of Westerberg’s recent success to an increased comfort level with the knee. Westerberg finished third in scoring average in the conference after his round Monday in Northfield.

Red Wing has had more scores recorded in the 70s this season than last season, Petterson said, however, they haven’t come on the same day, which leads Petterson to remain optimistic about the team’s chances at making a run during the section tournament. The Section 1AAA tournament begins May 31 at Bellwood Oaks Golf Course in Hastings.

Matthew Petterson, who has recently battled shanking the ball, responded by putting together one of his better rounds of the season. Petterson matched Westerberg until the final five holes where he made three bogeys.

“It’s kind of working its way out of his game,” Todd Petterson said. “He played with a lot more confidence today. He’s still a little bit shaky but it’s coming.”
