How does a team top a six home run game – it doesn’t but fourth-ranked Zumbrota-Mazeppa came close Thursday in an 18-6, five-inning win over Kenyon-Wanamingo in Zumbrota.

The Cougars only hit five home runs and three of them came in a seven-run third inning. The five home run outburst pushed Z-M’s season total to 30, which is a new school record. The previous Cougars’ record for home runs in a season was 27.

Amber Jenstch finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI. Jentsch hit a grand slam in the second inning and followed that up with a two-run shot in the third inning.

Lydia Wagner, Tayler Mort and Megan Nelson had the other home runs for Z-M (16-2, 12-1 HVL). Wagner hit a solo shot in the third while Mort and Nelson each had three-run blasts.

The Knights actually had a lead in the game, too. After falling behind 3-1, Kenyon-Wanamingo scored five runs in the second to take a 6-3 lead to turned out to be very brief. The Cougars came back for five runs of their own before dismantling the Knights in the last two innings.

Z-M faces Cretin-Derham Hall Friday in St. Paul.
