Red Wing high school alumnus Pat Kelly was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his impressive performances last week.
Kelly, a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was awarded Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after going 8-for-18 with two home runs, four RBI and 15 total bases in four starts last week.
Kelly did most of his damage against the University of Minnesota during the weekend. He hit home runs in consecutive games, Friday and Saturday, while adding a double Sunday in a three-game sweep of the Golden Gophers in Lincoln.
In 39 games, Kelly is fourth on the team with a .331 batting average, second with a .564 slugging percentage and third on the team with seven home runs. His seven home runs are the most by a Cornhuskers’ freshman since Alex Gordon hit seven in 2003, according to the Nebraska Sports Information Department.
The Cornhuskers’ final series of the regular season starts today against the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
