Former Red Wing High School standout Kathryn Boldt is an assistant coach for the Valparaiso University softball team that won the Horizon League championship Saturday.
Boldt is in her first year as an assistant coach after playing four years on the Valparaiso softball team and graduated last year with a major in business management. Boldt, a 2007 graduate of Red Wing, held Valparaiso’s single-season home run record with 11 in 2011 but it was broken this year by Jordan Rutkowski, who hit 14.
Valparaiso (42-17) was the No. 1 seed going into the Horizon League tournament but lost in the first round and needed to win five consecutive games to secure the championship, defeating Loyola-Maramount in the championship game. Valparaiso will be making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament and will face Louisville (53-3) Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN 2.
