Byron held off a seventh-inning rally from Goodhue Monday for a 5-4 victory in Goodhue.
The Wildcats (6-12, 2-11 HVL) had the tying run on second base with two outs but the Bears got a strikeout to end the game. Goodhue made it a 5-4 game with Paige Gadient’s RBI groundout earlier in the inning.
Vanessa Anderson hit a solo homer for Byron and got the win. Anderson threw all seven innings, struck out six and walked none.
The Wildcats outhit the Bears 8-3, but gave up nine walks and hit a batter. Byron scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
The Bears raced out to a 4-0 lead before Goodhue responded in the bottom of the fourth inning for a pair of runs. Byron extended the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats cut it to 5-3 with a run in the bottom half.
Gadient finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Brooke Bitzan went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Goodhue.
The Wildcats play Randolph Friday in Randolph
