The Red Wing Fire Department received a call reporting a natural gas leak near the intersection of Twin Bluff and Pioneer roads at about noon today.
Within three minutes, firefighters were on the scene and soon discovered that a utility company had inadvertently breached a residential gas service, which resulted in a significant natural gas release, the fire department reported.
A section of Hay Creek Road was closed off for about an hour and Twin Bluff shut down its outside air handling units for about 45 minutes as a precaution.
Other than the immediate vicinity, there was no danger to the public or the middle school, officials said.
Xcel Energy gas crews assisted at the scene.
