Wisconsin state officials are reporting that warm spring weather will lead to more blacklegged tick activity this year, and people should take extra precautions.

In Wisconsin, infected blacklegged ticks, aka deer ticks, can carry Lyme or other diseases, State Health Officer Dr. Henry Anderson said.

The following tips can help prevent tick bites and reduce the chances of getting tickborne diseases:

• Avoid wooded and bushy areas. Stay toward the center of trails to avoid contact with grass and brush.

• Use effective tick repellents.

• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to shield yourself from ticks.

• Check your body frequently and remove ticks promptly if found. Pay special attention to the head and scalp where ticks tend to hide.
