A grand slam turned out to be a two-run double for Amery Monday and the play factored in a 5-3 Ellsworth victory in Ellsworth.
Amery hit a grand slam in the second inning but the third runner failed to touch home plate before the batter. The play was called a double and only two runs scored. The play kept the game tied 2-2 and the Panthers (9-2, 7-2 Middle Border) grabbed the lead in the fourth and held on for the win.
“It was the right call, but it’s not something you see every day,” Ellsworth head coach Ryan Casper said.
Riley Harrison went 2-for-2 with three RBI for the Panthers. Taylor Nelson finished 1-for-3 with two runs and Aubrey Langer was 1-for-1 with a run.
Halle Hatch came on in relief of freshman starter Serena Hoisington in the sixth inning to pick up the win. Hatch gave up one unearned run on two hits, struck out three and walked none.
Hoisington threw the first five innings, struck out four and walked four. Hoisington allowed two runs on four hits.
