UPDATE: Boy dies near Goodhue Friday

A 10-year-old boy died Friday evening near Goodhue after having a "medical issue" while climbing a tree, the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office reported.

Derek Strickland died at the scene. Extended family said he became tangled in a rope swing and apparently broke his back.

Emergency crews were called to 33792 County Road 6 at 5:17 p.m. Family members performed CPR on Strickland until emergency crews arrived at 5:25 p.m.

Preliminary results from the Goodhue County Medical Examiner's Office indicate that the death was accidental, the sheriff's office said Monday.

Goodhue First Responders, Goodhue Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Red Wing Ambulance and Mayo Helicopter all responded to the scene.
