School notes

Twin Bluff Middle School

Band concert

The sixth- and seventh-grade band concert is 7 p.m. May 7 at the Red Wing High School.

Field trip

The fifth-grade classes will take a field trip to the Sheldon Theatre May 8.

Burnside School

PAC meeting

The next parent advisory committee meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Friday May 11 at Burnside.

Kids Junction

The children made hot air balloons to soar over their caterpillars.

Trek for Respect

On May 10 students will have “Trek for Respect” assemblies at 9:45 a.m. and at 1:20 p.m. This assembly teaches respect for self, others and surroundings. It also reinforces the golden rule: treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Minnesota Twins Day

The Minnesota Twins Day promotion will be celebrated during lunch Thursday May 10. Foot-long hot dogs will be served and every student will receive something special. There will be a drawing for a pair of tickets to watch the Twins against the Oakland Athletics at Target Field on Sunday July 15.

Running the mile

All student’s will be running the mile for phy ed May 9 and 10.

Family Fun Night

Title 1 Family Fun Night for Sunnyside and Burnside will be at the Red Wing Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday May 8. This is an ice cream social and a book will be given to all children who attend. All family members are welcome.

Rainforests

Carol Schwartau’s class is learning about the different rainforests of the world. Students practiced their "Words Their Way" with chalk on the blacktop.

Space shuttle exhibit

The space shuttle exhibit is at Burnside for third-grade classes. On May 4, Neil Lahammer’s class will visit in the morning and Julie Gore’s in the afternoon. On May 7, Rachel Glover’s class will visit in the morning and Bill Pfohl’s in the afternoon. On May 8, Kim Thompson’s class will visit in the morning and Gina Borgen’s in the afternoon. On May 9, Sue Busch’s class will visit in the morning and Deb Brodie’s in the afternoon.

Sunnyside School

Walking Wednesdays

On May 2, there were 72 students who walked or rode their bikes. Our winners were: Jenna Bangard, from Mrs. Newman's second-grade, Kayla Radtke, from Mrs. Nelson's first-grade, and Austin Lowman, from Mrs. Johnson's kindergarten.

Preschool visits

Sunshine Corner will visit on May 7 and 8. Colvill Kids visit on May 8 and 9, and Adventures in Learning visit on May 11.

Kindergarten town tours

Kindergarten classrooms will tour White Rock State Bank, McDonald’s, Target, Red Wing Cinema 8 and have lunch at Colvill Park.

Tuesday May 8: Mrs. Fagerlund, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Otterness and Ms. Pumper; Wednesday May 9: Mrs. Dressen and Mrs. Kelley; Thursday May 10: Mrs. Mahn, Mrs. McDonnell, Mrs. Prahl and Ms. Prigge.

First-graders will visit Carpenter Nature Center near Prescott. Tuesday May 8: Mrs. Bjork, Mrs. Damman, Ms. Pearson, Mrs. Cashman, Mrs. Grove and Mrs. O’Leary; Monday May 14: Ms. Maki, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Swanson.

Library news

Students in library classes celebrated “El dia de los ninos, el dia de los libros” (Children’s Day/Book Day), which honors the languages and cultures of children from around the world. Students enjoyed hearing Book Fiesta and explored the language, clothing, hopscotch games and folktales of children from several Latin American countries.

Kids Junction

The children made a colorful star collage. Friday Fun Day included a movie and popcorn.

St. John's School

Kindergarten

Students are talking about the value of pennies and nickels. "Y" is tricky to write. Students will keep practicing.

Little Blessings

Preschoolers will sing for the 10:30 a.m. worship service May 6. Children should meet in church at 10:10 a.m. “Daniel in the Lion's Den” is the Bible lesson this week.

Grades 1 and 2

On May Day, students made and delivered 100 May baskets to congregational members in Jordan Towers and Seminary Plaza. Mrs. Nicole Mahoney provided materials for the baskets. Students had their last library visit of the school year. Library cards came home Wednesday.

Grades 3,4,5

Students took math tests this week. Grade 5 is learning about capacity weight and surface area. Students are learning to write sonnets.

Grades 6, 7, 8

Students continue to read novels by either Ted Dekker or Frank Peretti. As they read, they are finding evidence that both these authors are Christian. Everyday Math 6 practiced combining like terms. Transition Math defined some basic geometric terms: point, line, plane, etc. They represented the intersection of these. Algebra students are factoring monomials out of polynomials and multiplying polynomials.

Colvill Family Center

Colvill Kids 3’s

Miss Tina’s classes will be reading “Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?” by Eric Carle. The class will be talking about what they like to do with their moms. They will be making a special surprise for their moms for Mother’s Day.

Colvill Kids mixed-ages class

Students will read “Duck On A Bike” by David Shannon. The children will sort different types of vehicles and learn about the letter Uu for Umbrie Umbrella. On Wednesday May 9, they will take a field trip to Colvill Park.

Colvill Kids 4’s

The 4’s classes will be reading “Old Black Fly” by Jim Aylesworth. They will be learning the letter Uu with Umbie Umbrella. They will visit Sunnyside School and Colvill Park. Thursday or Friday will be “All Color Day.”

Preschool screening

Screening will be May 17. The state requires that all children entering kindergarten complete preschool screening. Please call Colvill at 651-385-8000 to schedule a time.

Red Cottage Montessori

Friends

Children talked about homes and where they live. They enjoyed having two new students this week and they said goodbye to a student who moved away.

Butterflies

Extended-day students caught butterflies Wednesday. They learned the art of being quiet, gently catching butterflies and then letting them go. Hundreds of butterflies covered wildflowers in the Hay Creek woods.

Art

Midge Bolt has been teaching students the five elements of drawing. Children have discovered the five elements in everything they draw.

Adventures in Learning

Mother's Day

All of the students went bowling at Bierstube Bowl. The students have been watching and measuring the growth of the caterpillars and plants. Mother’s Day is keeping the children busy with making lots of surprises. All students are invited to sing at the 11 a.m. service this Sunday at United Lutheran Church.
