Girls Golf: Wingers tie defending state champs at Alexandria Invite

Red Wing tied for second place with reigning Class 3A state champion Wayzata Wednesday at the Alexandria Invitational played at Alexandria Country Club.

Red Wing tied for second place with reigning Class 3A state champion Wayzata Wednesday at the Alexandria Invitational played at Alexandria Country Club.

The Wingers and Wayzata finished with a 332 while Detroit Lakes tallied a course-low 320 to win the meet.

Senior Katie Kesti and sophomore Nicole Schammel both shot 80, good for seventh place, to lead Red Wing. Senior Marisa Toivonen ended with an 83, seventh-grader Stephanie Herzog and ninth-grader Reagan Haley both had an 89, junior Maddie Flack shot a 92 and ninth-grader Kayla Oberding contributed a 97.

“I was really pleased with the way the girls played,” Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog said. “We’ve had a busy week but we’ve really played well through the three days. Now, we have some things to work on.”

Sarah Burnham, of Wayzata, shot a course-low 69.

The Wingers get a short break before competing against Lake City and Northfield Monday at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City.
