Red Wing recovered from a loss over the weekend to defeat Rosemount 5-2 Monday in Rosemount.
The Wingers (4-1) were defeated 7-0 by second-ranked Elk River Saturday but responded with a victory against a sound team, Red Wing head coach Randy Decker said.
“This is a really good win for us,” he said. “They’re a really good team. They might be a top-15 team.”
Senior George Gabrielson defeated Will Holcomb 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, sophomore Isaac Toivonen breezed past Sean Hatlen 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and sophomore Alex Holm blitzed Jordan Randall 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
But it was in doubles where Decker said he was extremely pleased with the Wingers’ performances.
“Our doubles just finally played the way I kind of thought they could play today,” he said. “They were so good.”
Junior Luke Bryant and sophomore Nick Powers won 6-7, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles while eighth-grader Travis Toivonen and ninth-grader Josh Lyons defeated Morgan Davis and Matt Simmering 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to secure the clinching fourth point.
Red Wing competes again Tuesday against Northfield at Twin Bluff Middle School in Red Wing. The match begins at 4 p.m.
