Zumbrota-Mazeppa left 11 runners on base Monday but still managed to come out with a 5-3 victory against ninth-ranked Rochester Lourdes in Rochester.

The second-ranked Cougars (10-0, 7-0 HVL) knocked out 11 hits but couldn’t capitalize on some early chances, Z-M head coach Kevin Nelson said.

“They didn’t make some plays early and we hit the ball fairly well early,” he said. “We had lot of chances early to score some extra runs and didn’t.”

The Cougars scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.

Senior Megan Nelson got the win for Z-M, pitching a complete game, allowing one earned run, 10 hits and striking out six. She also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Senior Nasha Reuter was 2-for-4 with a double, junior Amber Jentsch finished 1-for-3 with a home run and sophomore Carley Henning was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sam Macken was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Rochester Lourdes and Hannah Nelson went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

The Cougars play Triton Thursday in Dodge Center.
