Second-ranked Zumbrota-Mazeppa relied upon its younger players Friday to pick up a 7-0 victory over Cannon Falls in Zumbrota.

The Cougars (6-0, 6-0 HVL) got a three-run homer with two outs in the third inning from freshman Tayler Mort while eighth-grader Morgan Olson drove in two runs and freshman Hailey Dykes went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

“Hopefully as the season goes on they’ll get smarter and better than they are now,” Z-M head coach Kevin Nelson said of his underclassmen.

Senior pitcher Megan Nelson allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out seven to get the victory. Nelson also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Friday’s game marked the first time this season the Cougars have been held to fewer than nine runs. Z-M tallied 10 hits for the game.

Megan Ripley took the loss for the Bombers (7-3, 3-3 HVL) after working five innings. Ripley gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Cougars face second-ranked (1A) New Life Academy today.
