The Red Wing boys golf team finished second Tuesday at the Red Wing Early Bird Invitational at Mississippi National Golf Course behind an even-par 71 from senior Tyler Grove.

The round marked Grove’s best in his varsity career and earned him medalist honors. Grove’s round helped the Wingers shoot 311. Edina won the meet with a 311 while Farmington placed third with a 325 at the six-team meet.

Senior Blake Westerberg shot 79 while seniors Jarrett Enevold and Matthew Petterson each shot 81.

“I think a lot of the guys were pretty disappointed with their score,” Red Wing head coach Todd Petterson said. “312 early in the year is not a bad score, either.”

In just the team’s third meet of the season and second with its full varsity lineup, Todd Petterson said the team is still working on its consistency.

“We’re still developing and trying to get better and part of that is the consistency thing,” Petterson said. “Hopefully we’ll get people who are much more consistent throughout the year.”

Jack Gorman shot 84 and Ross Elford had an 85 for the rest of the varsity lineup.

The Wingers will head to Brainerd Friday and Saturday for the Pequot Lakes Invitational at Grand View.
