The Lake City boys tennis team hung around against Rochester John Marshall Tuesday but fell 4-3 in Lake City.
John Marshall’s top two singles players were too much for the Tigers (1-2) but Lake City had an opportunity to pull out the upset in the end.
“It was a very close match,” Tigers head coach Dave Toole said. “We had a chance at them.”
Jason Howard, an eighth-grader at John Marshall and one of the best singles players in the tri-state area, defeated Lake City junior Christian Custer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and sophomore Landin Burdis dropped his match at No. 2 singles to Abhinav Lamba 6-0, 6-1.
But junior Riley Forcelle continued his steady play at No. 3 singles, defeating Alex Cheng 6-0, 6-4.
“Riley is ‘steady Eddie’ at No. 3 singles,” Toole said. “He does a nice job.”
Sophomore Cort McElmury got his first victory of the year at No. 4 singles against Ryan Moger, 6-2, 6-0.
The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of junior Andrew Schreck and sophomore Alex McCormick fell 6-3, 6-3 but eighth-grader Brady Kuchinka and sophomore Logan Adler combined to win 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Eighth-grader Matt Kjos and seventh-grader Peyton Fick lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Lake City travels to face St. Croix Lutheran/New Life Academy Thursday in West St. Paul.
