Colfax hit a line drive to first base for the final out with the tying run on third base and the Pepin-Alma baseball team escaped with a 6-5 win Thursday in Colfax.

The Eagles (2-1, 1-0 Dunn-St. Croix) made seven errors and stranded eight runners on base in the game but still came away with the victory.

“I told the boys they were just real lucky,” Pepin-Alma head coach Eric Bjork said. “They were ahead of us going into that seventh inning. We were lucky. I’ll take it.”

Senior Jake Lerum pitched a complete game for the victory. He scattered four hits and allowed one earned run, five walks and had eight strikeouts. Junior Cole Carroll hit two doubles and had an RBI while sophomore Charlie Raethke went 3-for-4.

Ethan Kiekhafer started on the mound for Colfax, surrendering six hits in four innings and striking out two Eagles.

Bjork said he was happy to get the victory but it wasn’t pretty.

“We got to clean up the bases,” he said. “We left five guys on in the first two innings. That and the seven errors. We dropped two fly balls in the outfield … The stuff you don’t want to see, the mental mistakes. We’ve got to clean that stuff up and take care of the guys on base.”

Pepin-Alma hosts Spring Valley Tuesday.
