The Zumbrota-Mazeppa softball team overpowered Goodhue 10-0 in five innings Thursday in Zumbrota.
Senior pitcher Megan Nelson fanned the first five Wildcats (0-1, 0-1 HVL) to start the game and the Cougars tallied three runs in the both the first and second innings to get the season start right for Z-M.
“All in all it was a pretty good outing,” Cougars head coach Kevin Nelson said. “We did a good job of being disciplined at the plate.”
Senior Nasha Reuter had a two-run double in the first inning and went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the victory. Sophomore Carley Henning was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Amber Jentsch had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Nelson was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI at the plate. She pitched all five innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Junior Ashlyn Stecklein and sophomore Meredith Watson were both 1-for-2 to lead Goodhue. The Wildcats committed one error in the game.
Goodhue plays Kenyon-Wanamingo at home Monday and Z-M hosts La Crescent Tuesday.
