Baseball: Plum City thumps Glenwood City

The Plum City baseball team responded from its doubleheader thumping at the hands of Somerset with a 12-4 victory against Glenwood City Thursday in Glenwood City.

The Plum City baseball team responded from its doubleheader thumping at the hands of Somerset with a 12-4 victory against Glenwood City Thursday in Glenwood City.

The Blue Devils (1-2, 1-0 Dunn-St. Croix) tallied 14 hits in the victory.

“We weren’t quite as outmatched today as we were against Somerset,” Plum City head coach Kevin Mueller said. “We responded well today.”

Senior Darren Fetzer was 3-for-4 and ninth-grader Ben Funk went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in the win. Ninth-grader Nash Gilles hit 4-for-5 with three RBI. Junior Tyler Niebur got the win on the mound for the Blue Devils, pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs while striking out six Glenwood City hitters.

Mitch Junker and Kyle Peterson each went 2-for-4 to lead Glenwood City.

Plum City got off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the first inning and adding another run in the second. Glenwood City scored its first runs in the bottom of the third inning and scored two more runs in the fourth inning but the Blue Devils scored runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to push the lead to 12-3.

Glenwood City put one run across the plate in the seventh inning.

“We had a lot of good focus and a lot of good at bats,” Mueller said. “We’re so young; we’re going to keep improving as we go.”

Plum City travels to face Saint Croix Central Tuesday.
