Red Wing City Council approved conceptual plans for improvements to the quarry areas on Sorin’s Bluff as proposed by the Red Wing Area Fund and Live Healthy Red Wing.

The park areas were developed in the late 1920s and early 1930s with limestone structures, steps, fire areas and other pieces, Planning Director Brian Peterson said at Monday’s council meeting.

“So much of that work is deteriorating,” he said. “A lot of this is about restoring what’s there.”

The two groups want to improve safety and recreational use while preserving the historic remnants and reducing or maintaining current management needs, Peterson said. The plans include fire rings, improving stairways and railings, adding a picnic shelter with restrooms, a playground area, kiosks and mapping and more.

“I love that we’re doing this as restoration,” Council member Lisa Bayley said.

Members unanimously approved the conceptual plans, letting the groups know they are on the right track with the proposals.
