Burnside Elementary
Kids Junction
The children made gorgeous kites to help bring in the “spring is near” theme.
Art
Fourth-graders in Joyce Peterson's art classes are completing their clay storytellers and listeners by painting them with colors of their choice. Students learned about April Trujillo, a girl in New Mexico whose family makes clay storytellers to sell. They then looked at many examples from professional artists and former Burnside students. Each student came up with their own creative version of a storyteller and listener. They will be displayed in the hall cases for the month of April.
Grade 2
Carol Schwartau’s class will be reading their way around the world. Each child will visit each continent, read stories from that continent and get their passport stamped. This will be part of their “read to self” time.
Scott Briske’s class read “Confessions of a Former Bully” by Trudy Ludwig in an effort to bring bulling awareness to Burnside. The class had many lively discussions and practiced a variety of anti-bulling methods suggested throughout the story.
Grade 4
Mike Pagel’s class won a sub party and an American Heart Association banner to hang in their classroom for being the class with the highest participation in Burnside’s recent Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. Over three-fourths of the class participated in raising money for the American Heart Association.

Red Cottage Montessori
Fundraiser
The school is holding a “paper doll” fundraiser. Rather than have people buy coffee, chocolates or fruit, the children are passing out figures cut out of brightly colored paper and asking people to give $5 toward the playground. That way all the money goes to the school.
Nature hikes
Children have been taking nature hikes and observing what happens when it rains — worms emerge, animals leave tracks and Hay Creek changes. They have found many signs of spring, from birds to buds. The “beach” across the street has a new load of sand from the recent rainstorm.
Schedule
There will be school Monday March 26, and conferences are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Spring break will be April 2-6.
