Area Notebook: Red Wing’s Kelly Freshman of the Week

Former Red Wing baseball player Pat Kelly was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of th Week March 19 after a torrid week at the plate for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Former Red Wing baseball player Pat Kelly was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of th Week March 19 after a torrid week at the plate for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The freshman middle infielder hit .571 (8-for-14) with a triple and two home runs while playing in four of the Cornhuskers’ six games last week.

Kelly leads Nebraska with a .467 (14-for-30) batting average to go along with five extra-base hits and eight RBIs for the Cornhuskers (14-7) in 11 games.

•Augsburg hockey player, Trevor Doden, of Red Wing, was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference men’s hockey All-Conference team for the 2011-12 season.

Doden, a senior for the Auggies, finished tied for first in the conference with 14 goals scored and six power-play goals. He tallied 22 points for the season, tying him for 12th place in the conference.

•Carleton College’s Caleb Rosenow, a former Red Wing High School standout, was named to the MIAC All-Conference basketball team for the 2011-12 season.

The 6-foot-7 senior forward averaged 14.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game, both second on the team, in 25 games this season. Rosenow led the Knights with a .567 field goal percentage and 22 blocks.

•Merryssa Tiedeman, a Zumbrota-Mazeppa graduate, leads the College of St. Scholastica softball team with 10 RBIs in the team’s first 14 games. Tiedeman, a junior outfielder, is hitting .318 (14-for-44) with three doubles and a homerun. She also has two steals for St. Scholastica (8-6).

•Red Wing graduate Augie Lindmark was named captain for the Luther baseball team. Lindmark, a junior pitcher, is 1-1 in two starts with six strikeouts in 12 innings for Luther (2-2) this season.

• Steph Brown, a junior tennis player at Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn., is the No. 2 singles player for the Royals and has a 2-2 singles record in four matches so far in the spring season. Brown, of Lake City, is also 2-2 as a member of the No. 1 doubles team at Bethel.

•Lake City graduate, Maranda Dohrn, averaged 9 points per game this season for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (21-7, 12-4 WIAC) women’s basketball team in 28 games. The 6-foot senior post player led the team in rebounds with 11.1 per game and 32 blocks as the Falcons made the NCAA Division III Tournament. Dohrn was named All-WIAC Honorable Mention and made the All-Defensive team.

•Danielle Brooks put together a 41st-place showing at the Jackrabbit Invitational March 12 in Primm, Nev. for the Drake University Bulldogs women’s golf team. Brooks, of Red Wing, shot a three-round score of 249 (83-78-88) and is currently tied for 46th at the Monterey Bay Invitational after two rounds.

Brooks, a freshman, shot a first round 86 Sunday and a second round 81 Monday at Del Monte Golf Club in Monterey, Calif.

The final round of competition wasn’t completed before today’s deadline.
