Sophia Reidt caught fire at the end of the first quarter and helped push the Pepin-Alma girls basketball team to a 66-43 victory over Brookwood during the first round of WIAA Regional playoffs Tuesday in Pepin.
Reidt, a senior, knocked down three 3-pointers in the first quarter and helped get the Eagles (15-5, 10-3 Small-Dairyland) jumpstarted after a sluggish start, Pepin-Alma head coach Larry Grisen said. She led the Eagles with 20 points, including five 3-pointers.
Junior Ali Murray added 10 points and senior Molly Grisen tallied nine points in the win.
Skylar Hammon and Kaylynn Laufenberg led Brookwood (9-14, 6-8 Scenic Bluffs) with 10 points each.
Fifth-seeded Pepin-Alma held a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter but took over from that point on and outran 12th-seeded Brookwood after halftime, Larry Grisen said.
“It was obvious in the second half their legs were tired,” he said. “They were pretty gassed.”
The Eagles were ahead 47-28 at the end of the third quarter and forced a tired Brookwood team into quick shots, Grisen said.
“I think we just got them playing faster than they wanted to play,” he said. “We were able to get them running.”
Pepin-Alma made eight 3-pointers and 14 of 25 free throws in the game. Brookwood made 16 of 26 free-throw attempts.
The Eagles will play fourth-seeded Wonewoc-Center Friday in Wonewoc.
