To the Editor:

The March Minnesota Food Share campaign called “Be a Hero! Fight Hunger!” has kicked off. It’s the one month of the year when the focus is on filling all 300 food shelves across the state.

Last year, the generous people and businesses in Red Wing donated 12,000 pounds of food and $33,000 to our local shelf. This year’s goal is 13,500 pounds and $35,000.

Bring your donation of non-perishable food to a church near you or directly to the Food Shelf, 1755 Old West Main St. Donations will be accepted on Monday and Wednesday at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 4 to 6 p.m. or Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Checks may be written to “Red Wing Area Food Shelf.”

Your $5 is worth $20 at the food bank in Rochester from which we spend about $125,000 for groceries a year.

Thank you on behalf of the 1,161 households who visited our food shelf a total of 3272 times in 2011. You make achieving our mission possible.

Be a hero! Fight hunger!
