Meet the instructor

Luke Hubbard began Suzuki lessons on the violin at the age of 4, traveling nearly an hour from his rural Arkansas farm to private lessons each week. The dedication of his mother paid off during his high school years as he soloed with his youth orchestra at age 17.

At the age of 12 Luke switched to the viola and has never looked back. He performed twice as a soloist with the University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and near the end of his bachelor degree he took second-place prize in the Music Teacher's National Competition in Denver.

He is working on a doctoral degree in viola performance with Korey Konkol at the University of Minnesota. During the course of his studies, he completed course work and practicum in Suzuki violin pedagogy at the University of Minnesota with Mark Bjork.

With a wife and two children, ages 3 and 1, Hubbard said he never sees a dull moment between school and family life.

His love of children and desire to give them the musical opportunities he was lucky to enjoy as a youngster are the primary reasons he currently teaches Suzuki violin lessons in Red Wing on Tuesdays at Colvill Family Center.

Dr. Shinichi Suzuki taught that all children can learn to play the violin well. Music is an integral part of a well-rounded life. Studying the violin, in particular, builds confidence and teaches coordination, dedication and creativity as students learn and build upon skills on a daily and weekly basis.
