The fourth-ranked Red Wing boys swimming and diving team delivered a 99-87 victory Thursday over Chaska/Chanhassen at Twin Bluff Middle School in Red Wing, but what impressed head coach Gene Petersen most was how the team performed despite swimming with fatigue.
Red Wing got one of its toughest tests of the season from Chaska/Chanhassen and for the first time since 2010 did not exhibition any event in a narrow victory.
“I’m more proud of my team that they stepped up and took it to an extremely good team when they were dead tired,” Petersen said.
The Wingers won all three relays while Andrew Berg in the 100-yard freestyle, Tanner Alms in the 50 free and 500 free, Connor O’Keefe in the 200 individual medley and Adam Sienczak in the 200 free all added victories.
Red Wing also got some unexpected points in the 100 breaststroke as sophomore Dan O’Keefe placed second, sophomore Kyle McKim placed third and senior Ozzy Ornelas finished fifth to give the Wingers eight points they didn’t count on, but ended up needing.
Chris Byrne set a personal record in diving to finish second and Seth Morem also set a personal record in diving to boost Red Wing.
The Wingers head to Austin Saturday to compete in True Team Sections before facing Rochester Mayo Tuesday in Red Wing.
