Red Wing head coach Mike Belisle said the Wingers boys hockey team took care of business Tuesday night in a 5-1 victory against Shakopee in Red Wing.
Senior Mike Stegora and junior Ryan Rehder each scored two goals to lead Red Wing (7-5, 4-1 Missota) to its third consecutive win. Senior Marcus Noesen also netted a goal for the Wingers. Junior Taylor Hanson, junior Alex Rezansoff, senior Tyler Grove and sophomore Michael Bigelbach each tallied two assists in the game.
“We touched the puck a lot tonight on our goals,” Belisle said. “We’re definitely gaining confidence.”
Kevin Menke scored Shakopee’s lone goal.
Red Wing started slow in the opening period but Rehder got the Wingers on the board first at 5 minutes, 23 seconds with the assist going to Hanson. Belisle said the average first period was good for Red Wing. It removed the mental block that sometimes forms after big wins like the one the Wingers got against New Prague last week, he said.
In the second period, Red Wing got goals from Noesen, Stegora and Rehder to take control of the game 4-0.
“We definitely bounced back right away,” Belisle said.
Stegora added the Wingers final goal at 12:10 of the third period for the 5-1 win. Junior Preston Blaney stopped 14 of 15 shots to get the victory as Red Wing outshot Shakopee 46-15.
“Any ‘W’ is a nice ‘W,’” Belisle said. “It turned out slow but we got accomplished what we needed to and very convincingly in the end.”
Red Wing’s next game is Thursday against Chanhassen in Chanhassen.
