Community recreation briefs for Dec. 21, 2011

Office hours

Red Wing Community Education/Recreation will be closed Dec. 26, 27, 30 and Jan 2.

Outdoor skating

The warming house at the Red Wing Athletic Field will open today, weather permitting. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 8 p.m. weekends. Warming house hours are subject to change and are conditional on weather.

There are two rinks available, one for hockey and one for public skating. The warming house has skates available for use.

Skating lessons

A new session of skating lessons will begin Jan. 9 at Bergwall Arena. Lessons are offered for youths ages 4 and older. The Ice Skating Institute’s “weSkate” curriculum is taught and all ability levels are welcome. Lessons are offered at 6:15 p.m. Mondays for nine weeks. Skaters receive a half-hour lesson and hour practice time. Parents are welcome to skate with their child during the practice time. Cost is $110.

T-shirt contest

United Way is sponsoring a T-shirt design contest in conjunction with the Red Wing High School Community Service Letter program. Students in grades 10-12 are invited to create a design for the back of the “Live United” shirt. The one-color design should be an original work of art that represents community service.

Applications are available from the RWHS art department or at the Community Rec office. Deadline is Dec 22. The winner will be awarded a $25 gift card.

Students can earn a letter by completing 50 hours of community service. Information regarding the program is available at the Community Rec office. Service hours will be counted through April 20 and there will be a recognition banquet May 2. All participants will receive a T-shirt from United Way this spring.

Hallwalking

The Red Wing Schools are open for walking before and after school. All participants must register at the Community Rec office. You will receive an ID badge that must be worn while in the buildings. Walking hours vary by school and the schools are not open during non-school days including weather related closures. Cost for the program is $5.00. The last day for walking in the schools is May 11, 2012.
