Red Wing boys hockey triumphs in opener

The Red Wing boys hockey team started out the season with a 3-1 victory over Rochester Mayo in Rochester.

The Red Wing boys hockey team started out the season with a 3-1 victory over Rochester Mayo in Rochester.

“It was a great game to start the season off,” Wingers’ head coach Mike Belisle said. “Everyone played a solid first game. It was a great team effort, no doubt.”

The Wingers (1-0) were led by junior forward Taylor Hanson who had two goals and an assist. Senior Jack Strusz added a goal and an assist. Junior Alex Rezansoff had an assist.

Red Wing scored first with a power-play goal by Strusz at 2 minutes, 9 seconds. Hanson pushed the lead to two 10 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Hanson scored again in the second period on a power-play and Rochester Mayo got its lone goal in the third period from Jack Dingle, assisted by Adam Alcott.

Belisle said he was pleased with the Wingers effort and Red Wing outshot Rochester Mayo 32-17.

Next up, the Wingers travel back to Rochester to take on Rochester Lourdes.
