Schnaith, medley relay on to state

AUSTIN, Minn. — Red Wing senior Abbey Schnaith captured a section title in the 100-yard freestyle Friday in the Section 1A girls swimming and diving finals to secure a trip to the state meet for the sixth consecutive year.

AUSTIN — Red Wing senior Abbey Schnaith captured a section title in the 100-yard freestyle Friday in the Section 1A girls swimming and diving finals to secure a trip to the state meet for the sixth consecutive year.

Schnaith won the event in 53.5 seconds, three-tenths of a second faster than her qualifying time Wednesday where she also had the fastest overall time.

Schnaith also went on to break the meet record in the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.85 seconds. Schaith placed second in the event despite the record-breaking swim. Schnaith has gone to the state meet in each of her varsity seasons for the Wingers.

The 200 medley relay team of Schnaith, Ashley Thompson, Hannah Walch and Ingrid Olson also qualified for the state meet. The relay finished fourth overall in a time of 1:54.55. The state qualifying time was 1:55.51.

The state meet begins next Friday at noon on the campus of the University of Minnesota at the Aquatic Center.
