Lake City’s Amy Orthaus earned a spot in the Class A girls tennis state tournament Tuesday with a second-place finish in singles play.
Orthaus, the No. 1 seed, earned a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Amy Mulvey in the semifinals to reach the finals against Stewartville’s Elizabeth Bardwell. Bardwell won 6-1, 6-0 to claim the section title.
Rochester Lourdes’ Margaret Pearson and Sofia Terzic defeated Cannon Falls senior Erica Zimmerman and junior Samantha Modrak in doubles play 7-5, 6-1 Tuesday in Owatonna to reach the Section 1A title match.
In the other side of the bracket third-seeded Kristen Brandhagen and Rachel Kamath from Rochester Lourdes defeated second-seeded senior Ashley Banitt and Kayla Anderson from Cannon Falls 6-1, 6-1.
Pearson and Terzic went on to beat Brandhagen and Kamath 6-2, 6-1 while Zimmerman and Modrak beat their teammates for third place 6-4, 6-0.
Zimmerman and Modrak got a true second match for a trip to state but fell to Brandhagen and Kamath 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Cannon Falls senior Megan Ripley lost her semifinal match 6-0, 6-2 to Bardwell. Ripley went on to face Mulvey for third place and fell 7-5, 6-0.
