Helpful things to know about living in Red Wing

Whether you're new to Red Wing or a longtime resident, it's helpful to keep the following information handy.

Whether you're new to Red Wing or a longtime resident, it's helpful to keep the following information handy.

Yard waste

Red Wing residents can drop off their yard waste including grass clippings, leaves and weeds at the city's waste management facility on Bench Street during regular hours of operations.

Brush, branches, trees and wood chips also are accepted for a fee.

Trash collection

Under Red Wing's trash pickup system, residents must roll their trash in a city-issued refuse container to the curb for pickup. Containers must be at the curb by 6 a.m. and should be placed with the lid opening facing the street. Containers must be placed at least four feet from obstructions such as signs, light poles, snowbanks, vehicles and buildings so that the automatic pickup equipment can be used.

Lids on the containers should be closed and garbage must be bagged and tied to prevent it from littering the streets. Yard waste, construction and demolition debris and hazardous waste should not be disposed of in regular garbage.

Contact the city at 651-385-3658 for more information about pickup dates, routes and schedules. During holiday weeks, regular collection may be delayed one day.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

City crews pick up glass, aluminum, newspaper and more. Citizens are not required to use a city of Red Wing recycling bin, but crews look for containers marked recycling.

All recycling items must be sorted and placed out at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on your designated recycling day. Recycling pickup coincides with the garbage pickup schedule. Call 651-385-3658 for more information.

Pet owners

Purchase your pet's license at the Humane Society, 1213 Brick Ave., 651-388-5286.

Don't let your dog bark incessantly. Under city ordinance, it is unlawful for the owner of any dog or cat to:

1. Fail to have the license tag issued by the Animal Control Agency firmly attached to a collar worn at all times by the licensed animal, or

2. Own or keep a dog or cat which is dangerous, or

3. Interfere with any peace officer, or other animal control agency in the performance of his or her duty

4. Fail to keep his or her dog from barking, howling or whining, or his or her cat from emitting loud or unusual noises.

Don't let your cat roam the neighborhood. City ordinance requires that cats, like dogs, be on a leash when outdoors.
