Red Wing girls soccer head coach Dusty Beckman said it was the best his team’s played all season but it wasn’t enough Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to Cotter in the Section 1A playoffs at Winona.
“It was a phenomenal game,” Beckman said. “It was one of those things we went out there and played the way we needed to play. We had it on their end a lot of the time.”
Fifth-seeded Cotter got a goal from Paige Gernes 17 minutes into the second half and it stood up as the game-winner for the Ramblers, who move on to face fourth-seeded Byron.
The 12th-seeded Wingers (3-10) had a chance to tie the game with 14 minutes to play when senior Kaitlin Bischoff connected on a shot that hit the post.
Despite the season-ending loss Beckman remained pleased with the progress the team made throughout the season in his first season as head coach.
“The girls made tremendous leaps from the first game to the last game,” he said. “Even the Cotter parents came up to me and complimented me.”
