The Red Wing girls soccer team fell 2-0 to Chanhassen in its regular season finale Thursday in Red Wing.
The Storm scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out at the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead and added a goal with 13 minutes left in the game on a fluky play.
Chanhassen had a shot hit off the crossbar of the football goal post and drop down that allowed the Storm to score, Wingers head coach Dusty Beckman said. The referee believed the ball hit off the soccer goal crossbar and therefore the ball was still in play, according to Beckman.
Despite the loss Beckman felt good about the team’s play.
“It could have gone either way a lot of times because we had a lot of attacks sustained,” Beckman said.
Red Wing (3-11, 1-5 Missota) moved the ball as well as it has this season and created some scoring opportunities, but the Wingers’ difficulty with finishing continued to surface.
“We had some good shots in the second half,” Beckman said. “Just not quite there yet.”
The final regular season game allowed Beckman to reflect upon the progress the team has made this season and he felt pleased about its accomplishments.
“From where we came at the start of the season to where we ended I’m really happy,” he said. “Hopefully we can carry it into sections.”
Red Wing begins the Section 1A tournament Tuesday. Section seeding will be completed Saturday.
