The Lake City girls soccer team fell to Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa 3-0 on a windy day in Pine Island.

“It was an extremely tough wind to play against,” Lake City coach Mark Spence said. “Overall, we played very well. It was a much better game than when we played them the first time.”

The Wildcats won the first meeting between the two teams 6-0, and they scored first Thursday with 17 minutes left in the first half. Earlier in the game, Lake City (2-9, 1-4 HVL) had a goal nullified on an offside call. The scored remained 1-0 into halftime.

Midway into the second half, PIZM got loose for a breakaway. The Lake City keeper left the net, collided with the striker and her own defender, and the ball trickled to another Wildcat player, who kicked it into the open net for a 2-0 lead.

The final goal for PIZM came with less than three minutes in regulation on a misplay by the Tigers’ goalie that got caught in the wind gusts and pushed past the goal line.

On Saturday, Lake City hosts an invitational and will play Stewartville in the first round.
