Mazeppa man dies in house fire

One man died in an early Saturday morning house fire on County Road 90 near Lake Zumbro, the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Fire fighters from Mazeppa, Zumbro Falls and Oronoco were called to the residence just after 1 a.m. The house was already full of smoke and becoming “fully engulfed,” the sheriff’s department reported. Crews worked until almost daybreak to put out the fire.

The body of David Oliver, 61, was found in the house after fire fighters extinguished the blaze. An autopsy will be performed.

Witnesses said the power had been out in the area. Authorities say candles burning in the residence likely contributed to the fire. Oliver was the only occupant in the house.
