Schnaith shines in Wingers loss

Red Wing senior Abbey Schnaith won the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke Thursday, but the Wingers fell 96-82 to Northfield at Twin Bluff Middle School.

Red Wing senior Abbey Schnaith won the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke Thursday, but the Wingers fell 96-82 to Northfield at Twin Bluff Middle School.

Schnaith came within 1.5 seconds of her own record in the backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 1.71 second as she won the event by nearly four seconds. Schnaith also won the 100 by nearly the same margin as she finished in 54.50 seconds.

Northfield built a 96-44 lead after the 200 freestyle relay and the final three events were excluding from its score.

Red Wing junior Sydney Steger, sophomore Ashley Thompson, sophomore Hannah Walch and sophomore Abby Sekus finished second in the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:05.75. Junior Jess Kolsky finished second in diving with 152.35 points.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Schnaith, eighth-grader Kelly Colwell, eighth-grader Ingrid Olson and Kolsky took second with a time of 1:51.63.

The Wingers added a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Thompson, Kolsky, junior Amy Nemanich and Schnaith finishing in 4:05.2.
