Z-M Coach Willie Rauen was pleased with the progress his team made at practices during the week and it paid off when the Cougars traveled to Winona to take on Cotter.
“Last week we struggled running the ball,” Rauen said. “We really worked on that in practice and did a much better job blocking and running the ball this week. And our line did a nice job on both sides of the ball tonight.”
The Cougars rushed for 390 yards as a team vs. the Ramblers.
Z-M did all the scoring in the opening half as the Cougars got two touchdowns from Kyle Forrey and one from Jordan Thompson. Forrey caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Zach Van Ostrand and a 24-yard scoring pass from Van Ostrand. Thompson’s touchdown was an 8-yard run.
Leading 18-0 at halftime, Z-M had two more touchdowns in the third quarter - a Van Ostrand 15-yard run and a Nathaniel Rauen 7-yard run – while Cotter also scored on a long pass play in the third quarter. The Cougars’ final score was a 6-yard run from Jermane Tyndale in the fourth frame.
Z-M is now 1-0 in the Hiawatha Valley League Gold Division and 1-1 overall. The Cougars resume play Friday with a home game against Kenyon-Wanamingo.
