LAKE CITY - The Red Wing boys soccer scored 1 minute, 28 seconds into its matchup with Lake City Monday and rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Wingers senior Peter Correll scored two goals, had an assist, and helped pace Red Wing’s attack all game long. Correll scored his first goal of the game at 8:34 on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the 18-yard box on a hard tackle.

Correll added another goal 11 minutes later after he dribbled through the Tigers’ defense and buried a shot into the right corner of the goal that gave the Wingers a 3-0 lead.

“He really set the pace, I thought,” Red Wing head coach Matt Quinn said.

Correll set the pace, but senior Andy Gehn set the tone by scoring less than two minutes into the game. A poor clearance attempt by Lake City allowed Gehn to pounce on a loose ball and put it in the back of the net.

Red Wing stayed in control of the game throughout but Lake City almost made it a shootout early.

Lake City’s Brandyn Oliver got the Tigers back into the game with a goal at 21:53 to make it 3-1. Oliver later narrowly missed on a scoring opportunity and Lake City had plenty of other quality opportunities in the first half.

Alex Rezanzoff made it 4-1 shortly before halftime with a rebound goal. Rezanzoff wasn’t around for long in the second half. Rezanzoff received a red card 10 minutes into the second half and the Wingers played the majority of the second half down a player.

Teagan Olin headed home a goal from six yards out on a cross from Correll with 25 minutes left to play in the game.

Red Wing had 13 corner kicks in the game and 14 shots on goal.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a game where we’ve had that many,” Quinn said.

The Wingers held Lake City to six shots on goal.

“We looked like we knew what we were doing a little bit tonight,” Quinn said. “I think Lake City gave us more time than some of the other teams we’ll face do.”

Red Wing faces Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa Thursday in Pine Island.
