The Red Wing girls tennis team started the season in impressive fashion Monday with a 7-0 victory at home over River Falls.
The Wingers won each match in straight sets against a River Falls team that played without five starters.
Red Wing senior Marisa Toivonen won 6-0, 6-0 against Taryn Studer at No. 1 singles. Red Wing senior Bryn Christenson had a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Taylor Caldwell at No. 2 singles while sophomore Nicole Schammel picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Laura Covelli, and junior Kristen Anderson won 6-1, 6-2 against Tori Forseth.
Junior Maddie Flack paired with freshman Lauren Brooks for her first varsity start and the duo came up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Miranda VanDell and Jourdan Whooley.
“As a first-time starter there's a natural tendency to be a little cautious, a little tentative - to worry about the score rather than just hitting the ball,” Red Wing head coach Randy Decker said. “Maddie didn't fall into any of those traps. She was aggressive, went for her shots and moved as well as I've ever seen her do. I couldn't have asked for a better performance from her.”
Junior Katie Kelly and junior Megan Clemmons defeated Miranda Peskar and Emily Gregg 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and senior Nakia Fritz and sophomore Emily Stegora rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Wingers played against Stillwater and Mahtomedi today in Stillwater.
