"When a painting has good value and composition and evokes excitement and emotion from those who view it - that is when I know I have been successful as an artist. There is great joy in painting what you love and finding out, in the end, that others love it too," Novak said about her work.

Her art has been inspired by the places she has lived and traveled. Her deep appreciation for beautiful places and interesting people grew and was reflected in her paintings as she moved from her birth state of Iowa to Colorado, California, Washington, D.C. and her current home of Minneapolis.

Her travels throughout the U.S., Europe and Mexico also fed her passion for her art.

Novak describes herself as a fine arts oil painter. She paints landscapes, still life and figurative works.

She began her artistic life as an art teacher and then changed direction to focus her talent on graphic design and illustration. She has done editorial and advertising illustration and design for corporations, managed her own agency, and then decided to focus all her energy on painting. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa and has studied at the Academy of Art, San Francisco; the Corcoran College of Art, Washington D.C.; and under the direction of numerous teaching artists.

Currently, one of her paintings is hanging in the Minnesota Governor's Mansion at the request of the first lady.

As part of the regular "In Session" series at Abode, stop in, visit with Novak and see her work this weekend.
