The budget deal to reopen state government appears possible but fragile.

Within minutes of GOP leaders and Gov. Mark Dayton’s announcement that they agreed to compromise, others on the political right and left started trying to tear it apart.

Monday, when the governor is expected to call lawmakers back into special session, will be the test. House Speaker Kurt Zellers and Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch must demonstrate they can rally their troops and garner enough votes to seal the deal. The governor also needs to apply pressure so Democrats vote, too.

“No one of us got exactly all of what we wanted,” Zellers said of the compromise Thursday.

That’s true, but it’s time to give citizens what they want — their government back.
