Temperatures during the June have been all over the thermometer. The first big heat wave hit June 6 and 7, and official temps topped out at 101 degrees.

Comparatively, the low of 46 degrees just four days later on June 11 seemed freezing. For those keeping track, that's a difference of 55 degrees.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Friedlein, big temperature swings aren't all that uncommon.

"At times, weather is made up of ups and downs," he said.

Still, last month was a bit more extreme than other years.

"This was a little more up and down than we normally see, especially the high spikes," Friedlein said.

It seems Red Wing is on top one of those spikes again. On Thursday, the last day of June, the town posted one of the hottest temperatures in the state at 97 degrees, Friedlein said.

Those varying temperatures have proved to be beneficial for the Goodhue Municipal Pool. Lifeguard Kelley Mann said patron turnout has been "exploding" in the past couple of days.

"Especially since the weather's been so bad, now that it's nice, people want to enjoy it while they can," she said.

Red Wing Water Park has seen a higher turnout as well, staff there said.

In addition, June has been wetter than normal, Friedlein said. Of the last 22 days of the month, 13 of them had at least a trace amount of rain.

"That's two of every three days," he said. "In general we had a cloudy, wet pattern."

As for July predictions, Friedlein said Red Wing may get some relief from the ups and downs, but probably not the heat or the wet weather.

"July -- normally the warmest month of the year," Friedlein said. "And (there are) chances for it to remain wetter than normal."
