Red Wing High School announced the hiring of a new girls swimming and diving coach earlier this week.

Hastings native Kevin O’Brien will be on the pool deck for the Wingers this fall. This will be O’Brien’s first head coaching position.

O’Brien graduated from the Wisconsin-River Falls in May, where he swam for two seasons.

His specialties included the 100- and 200-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley. He also has been an assistant coach with the Hudson Area Swim Association since 2009.

The new coach says he plans to focus on teaching proper technique, developing the athletes love for swimming and challenging the team to compete to the best of its ability.

O’Brien will be the third Red Wing coach in the last calendar year.

Sue Forsberg started the 2010 season, but stepped down midseason and was replaced by interim coach Jessica Kelly.
