No one from the Elmwood-Plum City contingent was in a hurry to drive home Saturday after the final day of the Division 3 Track & Field State Championships. Things went so well that the team lingered around Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse, Wis., for an hour after it finished.

"None of the kids wanted to leave," Plum City coach Rick Stewart said. "It was one of those great moments in high school sports for the athletes and the coaches."

The E-PC girls 4x800-meter relay team led things off by setting a co-op record with its time of 10 minutes, 7.24 seconds. The team was comprised of freshman Elaina Danzinger, junior Morgan Sweeney, sophomore Heather Von Holtum and junior Becky Hartung. Plus, they ran 12 seconds faster than their previous best.

"They all exceeded or met their goal for what they wanted to run," said Stewart, adding, "That was a wonderful start to the day."

The girls 4x400 team of Von Holtum, sophomore Jessica Olson, sophomore Marah Boyer and Hartung also set a program record. They came in fourth with a time of 4:08.48. They shaved 4 seconds off the record, according to Stewart, and 6.25 seconds of their time from prelims.

"They just ran an awesome race," Stewart said. "(They were) all smiles."

The E-PC boys took fifth in the 4x400. That relay team was comprised of senior Lance Von Holtum, sophomore Seth Jones, senior Tyler Churchill and senior Alex Gilles. They registered a time of 3:28.44.

In the 4x200, the E-PC girls came in seventh and missed out on medaling by one place. Freshman Sarah Gilles, Boyer, Olson and senior Jenna Reitz finished in season-best time of 1:50.20.

Alex Gilles earned all-state honors in the 800 by coming in fifth. His time of 2:00.32 was a personal best and a Plum City record. He also took ninth in the 400 (51.96).

E-PC tied for 25th in the boys competition with 10 points and tied for 28th in the girls field with seven points.
