A Lake City man died Saturday noon after attempting to save his dog in the Mississippi River.

Brian E. Harwick, 50, was at a family residence along Lake Pepin when his dog ran into the water and swam over a boat lift with an electric track system that runs under the water to the shore. The dog suffered a shock and began sinking, according to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office.

A family friend entered the water to help the dog and also was shocked; he managed to exit the water, a press release said.

Harwick then attempted a rescue, was shocked and fell unconscious into the river. Family and friends pulled him to shore where they started CPR and rescue breathing while waiting for emergency personnel.

Lake City Ambulance transported Harwick to the Mayo Health System in Lake City, where he died.

Lake City Police Department assisted at the scene.
