Area track and field: Lake City's Gay advances in three events
The Lake City girls placed second at the Section 1A subsection meet with 152 points, finishing 28.5 points behind host Plainview-Elgin-Millville. The Lake City girls placed second at the Section 1A subsection meet with 152 points, finishing 28.5 points behind host Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Anna Gay provided several of the highlights Thursday as she qualified for the section meet in three individual events.
In the long jump, Gay placed third by leaping 15 feet, 6 inches. She also is moving on in the triple jump because she exceeded the section standard. Gay, a senior, jumped 33-10 1/2 and came in fourth.
Gay tossed the discus 89-10, which was good for third place.
The top three individuals and relays, as well as any entrant that met the standard, will compete in the section meet on Tuesday and Thursday at Triton High School.
Kaylee Becker advanced in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles by placing second in each race. She finished the 100 hurdles in 17.17 seconds and she posted a time of 49.79 in the 300 hurdles.
Kristine Novak won the pole vault and broker her own subsection record in the event by clearing 10-6. She set the old mark last year when she cleared 10-1.
Lake City is sending four relay teams to the section meet. The Tigers won both the 4x100 (52.14) and the 4x200 (1:52.27). The Tigers took third in the 4x400 (4:19.17). They placed fourth in the 4x800, but their time of 10:14.96 met the section standard.
Lake City's Shannon Ting finished third in the 100 with a time of 13.39. Even though she took fourth, teammate Haley Vaith also advanced in that event because her time of 13.45 met the section standard.
Braeden McElmury also qualified for the section meet by finishing third in the 200 (28.11). Teammate Morgan Dammann advanced by taking third in the 800 (2:31.53).
On the boys side, Lake City senior Tate Yulga advanced to the Section 1A meet as an individual in two events.
He cleared 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault at the subsection meet and equaled the Section 1A standard. Yulga finished in fourth place.
He also advanced in the triple jump with a second-place finish (39-2) at Plainview-Elgin-Millville.
The Lake City boys' 4x200-meter relay team is moving on as well. It took third at the subsection meet with a time of 1 minute, 37.98 seconds.
The top three individuals and relays, as well as any entrant that met the standard, qualified for the section meet Tuesday and Thursday at Triton High School.
The Tigers finished fourth out of seven teams with 69 points at the boys subsection competition. P-E-M won with 257 points.
