The Cannon Falls boys had four individuals each qualify for three events at the Section 1A tournament during Tuesday’s subsection competition. They advanced by finishing in the top three at Byron Middle School.

Senior Demetre Growette took second in the 100-meter dash (11.82 seconds), first in the 200 (23.26) and first in the 4x400 relay (3:34.00).

Junior Paul Hernke and senior Dean Quinn both are moving on in the 400, 4x200 and 4x400. Hernke won the 400 (52.42) and ran the first leg of the second-place 4x200 team (1:34.39). Quinn took third in the 400 (52.76).

Brandon Poppe, a senior, advanced with a first-place finish in the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches) and as a member of the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Poppe was the alternate for the 4x400, but he ran the anchor leg because Chris Aiken suffered a hamstring injury.

“(I) don’t know if Aiken will make it for sections of not,” Bombers coach Ben Schopp said in an email.

Triton High School will play host to the Section 1A meet on May 31 and June 2.

Aiken, a senior, also qualified for sections in the 4x200.

Cannon Falls finished fourth out of eight teams at the subsection meet with 122 points. The Bombers finished one point behind third-place Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
