Area track and field: Ten Z-M boys qualify for sections

Led by Nathan Warneke’s two first-place finishes at the Section 1A subsection meet, Zumbrota-Mazeppa had seven entrants qualify for the section championships. An individual or relay team needed a top-three finish to advance.
Warneke, a junior, won the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 43.65 seconds) and the 3,200 (10:14.33) Tuesday at Byron Middle School.
Lucas Ziemba, a sophomore at Zumbrota-Mazeppa, won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8 inches.
Z-M’s 4x100 team of senior Chad Swenson, sophomore Tyler Quam, junior Colton Thoreson and junior Sean Adams are moving on thanks to their third-place finish (47.43).
The Cougars’ 4x800 team also came in third (9:27.53). The relay team was comprised of Thoreson, junior Keenan Klotz, freshman James Drettwan and senior Shawn Bromelkamp.
Adams took second in the triple jump (41-3 3/4).
Teammate Isaac Tschann, a senior, placed second in the 300 hurdles (42.36).
The Cougars finished third out of eight teams with 123 points. The host Bears won with 307 points.
The Section 1A meet will take place on May 31 and June 2 at Triton High School.
