Zumbrota-Mazeppa pitcher Josh Shirley gave the host Tigers fits Monday, according to Lake City coach Perry Iberg. With the win and K-W's loss Monday to Cannon Falls, the Cougars clinched the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division title outright.

Shirley gave up two hits while striking out six and walking three in a complete-game effort.

"He was in control the whole game," said Iberg, adding that Lake City didn't once have a threat to score.

Jordan Thompson belted a three-run homer in the third inning, which put Z-M up by four. He went 2-for-4. Zach VanOstrand went 1-for-4 with a two-run double.

Z-M finished the regular season with a 16-4 overall record and a 10-2 mark in league games. It travels to La Crescent on Friday for a 6 p.m. game to decide the HVL championship.

Lake City will again be at home Thursday when it plays host to Cotter Schools.

The Tigers are 6-12 overall and 5-7 in Hiawatha Valley League play.
